After Gastric Bypass Surgery, Women Battle Alcoholism

Alcoholadiction Gastric bypass surgery does not lead to alcohol abuse, but people who undergo the surgery need to be aware of and deal with emotional issues behind their weight gain. It is very important to undergo a psychiatric or psychological evaluation before you decide to go under the knife.

I wrote about alcohol and WLS before, but now I found this real life story of Patty Worrells and Jeannine Narowitz both battling alcoholism after gastric bypass surgery. Their story proves once again that we have to address the underlying emotional turmoil that makes us have to seek comfort from food and being aware of not trading one addiction for another.

Much research and preparation needs to be done before having gastric bypass surgery. I had it done four years ago and it was the best decision of my life. A friend of mine also had it done a little over year I had mine done and hers did not go as well as mine did. I had an amazing doctor, Dr Marina Kurian really helped me before, during and after my surgery to get through it in the best possible way one could. you should really check out her website at www.noobesity.com, there is some great info and it for anyone who is considering have the surgery done.

This is a very emotional post. I've dealt with switching from one addiction to another all my life, hopefully people find positive ways to deal with stress after these types of life changing events.

I had GBS in 2004. I did great for 2 years until I seperated from my husband. I then began drinking wine on a regular basis (not daily but 3-4 times per week). I got a DWAI last Sept and now a DWI last weekend 9/5/09. I am in alot of trouble! I am a Rn and director for a home care agency for 2 counties in NY. I could lose my job. I knew I was tipsy, but I got an aggravated DWI which my attorney tells me I must have had a BAC over .18. I am in a real mess. I also have gaine 50# back, most likely due to the alcohol!!!
