UK Recommendation: Free Surgery for Obese Children

Here again one of those news I just can’t resist to comment about. I am getting tired of reading about proposals to “solve” the obesity problem in children buy just letting them go under the knife. (AKA surgery). This is not the way a society has to evolve. I will say it once again: put the money in prevention and education first. Now read on:

The Government’s health watchdog in the UK is to recommend that seriously overweight children should be offered expensive weight-loss surgery on the NHS, according to reports.

The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE), which is currently under fire for rationing Alzheimer’s drugs, will publish final plans for the treatment of obesity in adults and children next month.

The organization said it was considering proposals that overweight teenagers should be offered stomach surgery, as a last resort to help them to lose weight if other treatments had not been successful. The operations could prevent them developing side-effects of obesity, such as diabetes, and ease the burden on the NHS.
